With a career spanning 30 years in the New Zealand wine industry, Tony is one of the country’s most experienced viticulturists. For many years he held one of New Zealand’s leading viticultural roles as Director of Viticulture and Director, Viticulture and Wineries for the country’s largest winemaker. This encompassed responsibility for over 5,000 ha of company controlled and contract grower vineyards. As a member of the executive team, Tony gained detailed insight into the strategic, tactical and operational decision making required to successfully operate a global wine company. This demanded an in-depth understanding of the drivers of grape / wine quality and winery / vineyard production efficiency, as well as collaboration with teams involved with new product development, marketing, sales, human resources and finance.
From a viticulture perspective, his practical and commercial track record is backed with sound qualifications, having gained a Bachelor of Applied Science, Viticulture from Charles Sturt University in NSW, Australia. Tony’s experience spans New Zealand’s winegrowing regions, with the major focus being Marlborough, Hawkes Bay, Gisborne, Central Otago and Waipara. He also gained valuable international experience having been exposed to the French and Australian industries and performing advisory roles in Argentina and Spain.
